Secondary school students presented their projects in the regional round of SOČ at UJEP
On 9 April, the Jan Evangelista Purkyně University in Ústí nad Labem, specifically our CPTO building, became a centre for young scientists. Over 70 pupils from secondary schools from the Ústí nad Labem region presented their research projects in the regional round of the Secondary School Vocational Activities (SOČ) competition.
The Secondary School Vocational Activities (SOČ) is a prestigious competition for talented secondary school students with a long tradition. High school students compete in solving professional problems in 18 disciplines. The SIC is not only knowledge-based, but the contestants must also demonstrate their ability to work independently, their presentation skills and defend their work before a jury of experts.
Many of this year’s works surprised even the expert juries, as they were so well prepared that they would have stood up even as bachelor’s theses. A new feature of this year’s edition was the possibility of online presentation, as some of the competitors are currently on internships abroad.
The first and second authors in each category advanced to the national round of the competition, which will take place from 13 to 15 June at the Teplice Gymnasium, again with the partnership of the UJEP.
In addition to the traditional awards, five UJEP deans decided to award special prizes for the best works in fields close to their faculties. Dean of the Faculty of Science of UJEP doc. RNDr. Michal Varady, Ph.D., awarded the thesis of Jan Št’astný from the Gymnasium Lovosice in the field of Mathematics and Statistics on the topic ‘Methods of mathematical analysis and mathematical modelling of the civil war in Syria and other military conflicts’.
