Head of the Department of Biology Markéta Gloneková guest on Czech Radio North’s Planetarium program

The head of the Department of Biology at the Faculty of Science, UJEP, Ing. Markéta Gloneková, Ph.D., was a guest on the Czech Radio Sever program Planetarium, where she introduced listeners to the fascinating world of giraffes – and, above all, to the latest findings that there is not just one species of these iconic mammals in the world, but four!

In the interview, you will learn what this new species diversity means for the giraffes themselves and their protection in the wild, how scientists came to this discovery, and whether individual giraffe species can encounter each other in the wild.
Markéta Gloneková also explains what giraffes eat, why they have such long necks and how it is possible that they do not get dizzy, and even what function the horns on their heads serve.

You can listen to the entire interview on the Český rozhlas Sever website or in the podcast section of the Planetarium program (23 minutes).

Dr. Markéta Gloneková was also a guest on our faculty’s Science Talks podcast in 2022, so if you are interested in other topics from her research, listen to this episode on SoundCloud or Spotify.
