More resilient and productive plants thanks to science

At the Department of Biology, Faculty of Science, UJEP, we are engaged in a wide range of research areas. One of these is plant physiology, plant biotechnology, and the study of crop genomes.
The aim of this focus is to understand how plants respond to different environmental conditions and to find ways to increase their resistance, yield, and adaptability to a changing climate.

We have modern research facilities at our disposal: a phytotron – an advanced system that simulates specific growing conditions, a new experimental greenhouse for controlled cultivation, and state-of-the-art laboratories.
Thanks to these technologies, we can monitor the growth and development of plants over the long term, study their responses to stress factors, and evaluate the effectiveness of various cultivation methods.

The results of this work can help address global challenges related to food security and sustainable agriculture.
Crops that are resistant to drought, extreme temperatures, or other stress factors can thrive in areas where this would not have been possible before, while requiring fewer resources.

We collaborate with other departments of the faculty and external partners on the development of new technologies and practices, not only in Czechia but also abroad.
