35 years of UJEP: from an abandoned former hospital site to a modern university campus
This year, UJEP is celebrating its 35th anniversary. Over that time, not only has the university itself undergone significant change, but so too have its facilities. One of the most striking examples is the campus in Klíše, Ústí nad Labem, which was created through the gradual transformation of a former hospital complex.
Just a few decades ago, some of its buildings were abandoned and falling into disrepair. Today, the site is a vibrant university campus where thousands of students study and where teaching, science, research and the day-to-day life of the university come together. The transformation of the site took place over approximately two decades and involved investments running into billions of crowns. Seznam Zprávy has now published an article on its history and present state, entitled ‘A transformation costing billions: From an abandoned hospital to a university town with hares’.
Another key part of the campus is the Centre for Natural Sciences and Technical Disciplines (CPTO), which was completed in 2020. It is here that the UJEP Faculty of Science now offers modern facilities for teaching, practical laboratory work and research.
At the CPTO, students from our faculty prepare for their future careers across a wide range of scientific and technical fields – from chemistry, biology and physics, through nano(bio)technology and computer science, to mathematics and geography. Alongside their specialist studies, teacher training and STEM programmes, they can also get involved in research projects and work with modern equipment and technologies.
The transformation of the campus also illustrates well the transformation of the university itself. UJEP’s 35th anniversary is not just a look back at its history, but also a reminder of how the facilities for education and science in Ústí nad Labem have gradually transformed into a modern university environment.
And the story of UJEP continues.
