The Faculty of Natural Sciences at UJEP will welcome experts in algae and cyanobacteria research in September
From September 23–25, 2026, the Faculty of Science at Jan Evangelista Purkyně University in Ústí nad Labem will host the 67th Meeting of the Czech Phycological Society. Experts in algae and cyanobacteria research from the Czech Republic and abroad will gather at the Center for Natural Sciences and Technical Disciplines (CPTO).
“Algae and cyanobacteria play a significant role not only in natural ecosystems but also, increasingly, in biotechnology, environmental protection, and the development of new materials. The annual conference of the Czech Algological Society, which is one of the most important professional gatherings in the field of phycology in the Czech Republic, will be dedicated to research on these organisms,” explains Mgr. Pavla Urbánková, Ph.D., the conference organizer from the Department of Biology at the Faculty of Science, UJEP.
The conference provides a platform for presenting the latest research findings, engaging in expert discussions, introducing new projects, and establishing collaborations between research teams. Experienced scientists as well as students in bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral programs regularly present their work here; for these students, the conference is a valuable opportunity to gain experience presenting their own scientific work in an international professional setting.
The conference is jointly organized by the Faculty of Science at UJEP and the Czech Algological Society. The official language of the conference is English, so that foreign researchers working in the Czech Republic, international collaborators of Czech research teams, and other interested parties can also participate fully.
Among the keynote speakers at this year’s event will be Prof. Dr. Nils Kröger from the Technical University of Dresden, who has long been researching the biomineralization of diatoms, RNDr. Dora Čertnerová, Ph.D., from Charles University, who will present research on the genome size of microalgae and its relationship to the biology and ecological requirements of these organisms; and Tyler J. Kohler, Ph.D., also from Charles University, who will focus on diatom communities in glacial streams and the impacts of glacial retreat on their diversity and functioning.
“Hosting this year’s meeting of the Czech Algological Society at the Faculty of Science at UJEP is not only a recognition of the professional work of our colleagues, but also another opportunity to showcase the faculty as a place where high-quality scientific research is conducted and international scientific collaboration flourishes. We are also delighted that experienced experts will meet here with the next generation of young scientists, who will have the opportunity to present their findings and establish new professional contacts,” says RNDr. Regina Herma, Ph.D., Vice Dean for External and International Relations at the Faculty of Science, UJEP.
The program will include specialized lectures, a poster session, and a social program, which will offer participants the opportunity for informal discussions and to establish new professional contacts.
More information about the conference, the program, and registration can be found on the event’s website.
Registration for the conference is open until August 1, 2026.
