The team of the Department of Geography won the 3rd place in the finals of the Student Scientific Conference

On 20 March, the University finals of the Student Science Conference 2025 took place, in which 8 student representatives from all faculties of UJEP competed and presented their research projects in various fields. Our team of geographers, whose project was presented at the conference by PhD student Mgr. Martin Bartůněk, whose project was presented at the conference, took 3rd place!

Mgr. Martin Bartůněk presented the project of the team from the Department of Geography, Faculty of Science, UJEP, ‘Critical places in higher cartographic education: analysis and initial interpretation of the results of a longitudinal study’, which focuses on the connection between didactics and geography. The research focused on the compatibility of historical and contemporary variants of tests, identification of problematic places in cartography education and their solutions. The study included the creation of a database with test questions and their analysis. The research was conducted under the supervision of Assoc. Jan D. Bláha and Dr. Petr Trahorsch, in addition to Mgr. Petr Hladík and Matouš Hrubý.

The winning project of this year’s Student Scientific Conference UJEP 2025 was the research ‘Methods of teaching popular singing abroad and in our country’, presented by Mgr. Markéta Chladová from the Faculty of Education, UJEP. The aim of the project was not only to map approaches to teaching popular singing abroad, but also to apply the findings to the domestic education system. The result will be a unique monograph containing methodological guidelines and a CD with modern vocal exercises.

The second place went to Ing. Michael Fanta from the Faculty of Social and Economic Sciences of the Jagiellonian University with his thesis ‘Cost-effectiveness analysis of screening and brief intervention in the field of alcohol in the Czech Republic’. The project focused on obtaining unique research data and its evaluation in order to quantify the cost-effectiveness of screening and brief intervention. Data collection was conducted using the Delphi method among GPs and the outputs will be published in an international scientific journal.

The public award from this year’s conference went to Mgr. Kristýna Šedivá from the Faculty of Environment of the Jagiellonian University with her research ‘Use of cold plasma for plant treatment and its application in environmental technologies’. The research focused on experiments with the plant Lactuca sativa (lettuce) and monitored changes in germination, biomass and photosynthetic activity after plasma treatment. The results show interesting trends in plant physiological changes and may contribute to environmentally friendly innovations in agriculture. The research was carried out in collaboration with the Department of Biology and the Department of Physics of the Faculty of Science, UJEP.

Congratulations to all the winners and especially to the whole team of our Department of Geography!
