The Rector’s Prize was also awarded to academics and students of the Faculty of Science at UJEP

The Rector’s Awards Ceremony for 2024 and scholarships for the academic year 2023/2024 took place on Thursday 12 December 2024. The Rector of Jan Evangelista Purkyně University in Ústí nad Labem doc. RNDr. Jaroslav Koutský, Ph.D., awarded academics and students of the Faculty of Science of UJEP for the year 2024.

Congratulations to all the awardees!

The Rector’s Awards have been awarded at UJEP since 2001. They are awarded for extraordinary activities and results achieved in a calendar year. The Rector of UJEP uses them to express respect and esteem for the work done by the staff and students of our alma mater.

A traditional part of the Rector’s Awards is also the awarding of scholarships from university donors to the best, most active and successful UJEP students for the academic year 2023/2024.

At this year’s ceremony the following seven students and academics of the Faculty of Science of UJEP were awarded:

DECREE OF EMERITUS ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR OF UJEP FOR THE YEAR 2024
received Assoc.prof. RNDr. Jaromír Hajer, CSc., who became an emeritus associate professor of the Faculty of Science of UJEP for his long-standing teaching and scientific activities in the field of Didactics of Biology, significant contribution in the field of Arachnology and merits in the development of the Department of Biology of the Faculty of Science of UJEP.

A STIPENDIUM OF THE MAYOR OF THE CITY OF ÚSTÍ NAD LABEM in the amount of 20 000 CZK
was awarded to Matěj Kaška, a student of the Bachelor’s degree programme in Applied Informatics at the Faculty of Arts, UJEP.

Matěj Kaška led the development team in the development of EDUBO and Eduklub systems for planning and sharing lesson plans for primary and secondary school teachers in cooperation with Mironet and Charles University Prague. He also developed a web-based tool for the international IntegrAGE project aimed at supporting older workers in the labour market. The application is now used by research teams from several countries and
is part of a forthcoming toolkit for the implementation of age management.

The scholarship was presented on behalf of the Mayor of Ústí nad Labem by Deputy Mayor Mgr. at Mgr. Tomáš Vlach.

TEPLICE CITY STATE CITY SCHOLARSHIP FOR THE BEST STUDENTS OF UJEP WITH HOUSING IN TEPLICE in the amount of 10 000 CZK
received by Bc. Ladislav Martinovský, a student of the Master’s programme in Applied Chemistry at the Faculty of Science of the Jagiellonian University.Ladislav Martinovský received the scholarship for his bachelor thesis “Synthesis and characterization of fatty acid ethyl esters from waste cooking oils and monitoring their stability”, in which he focused on the use of waste oils and bioethanol for biodiesel production. He synthesized a FAEE-based biodiesel sample, which he characterized and analyzed using spectral methods (FTIR, NMR). The results provided valuable insights for the production of biodiesel from waste oils, stable even after one year of storage. Outside of school, he has also worked on industrial decarbonisation projects.

The scholarship was presented by the Mayor of the Statutory City of Teplice Bc. Jiří Štábl.

THE RECTOR’S AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN THE FIELD OF TECHNICAL AND NATURAL SCIENCES
was awarded to prof. Ing. Zdeňka Kolská, Ph.D., employee of the Centre for Nanomaterials and Biotechnology at the Faculty of Science, UJEP

Prof. Zdeňka Kolská has intensive project and publication activities in the fields of nanotechnology, materials science and physical chemistry. Currently, she is leading a team of experts from the Faculty of Science of the Jagiellonian University, which will, in a consortium of eight other members, participate in a prestigious project awarded in the OP JAK Top Research call. The same success is also her involvement in the TA ČR partnership project.

THE RECTOR’S AWARD FOR EXEMPLARY REPRESENTATION OF THE UNIVERSITY ON A NATIONAL OR INTERNATIONAL SCALE
was awarded to prof. RNDr. Ivo Nezbeda, DrSc., from the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science, UJEP

Prof. Ivo Nezbeda is a world-renowned expert in the field of statistical physics of liquids. He received the Rector’s Award for his lifelong contribution to the development of molecular physics of liquids and its application in chemical engineering, as well as for his original results and for building the Czech school of statistical physics of liquids and molecular simulations. He is co-author of the Boublick-Nezbed equation of state and the Smith-Nezbed model, which became the basis for modern approaches to modelling liquids and colloidal particles. His pioneering work in molecular simulations and innovative approaches have significantly strengthened Czech science on the international scene.

THE RECTOR’S AWARD FOR STUDENTS FOR OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENTS IN CREATIVE ACTIVITIES IN THE FIELD OF ENGINEERING, SCIENCE AND ECONOMICS
Mgr. Eva Štěpanovská, a student of the doctoral study programme Applied Ion Technologies at the Faculty of Science of UJEP

Mgr. Eva Štěpanovská deals with modifications of graphene-like materials for applications in the field of lithium batteries. She has been involved in major research projects of OP JAK and GA CR, she also participates in a Japanese project with Nagaoka University of Technology. The results of her work to date have been reflected in six scientific publications, two of which she is the first author. For her work she has also received the J. Hlávka Award for talented young scientists.
