Week for Digital Czechia – join us again this year

The Faculty of Science of the UJEP is joining for the second time the largest educational event in the field of digitization in the Czech Republic, which will take place on 18-24 November 2024 across the Czech Republic and online. The project is organized by the Office of the Government – Digital Czechia platform. The overarching theme will once again be the development of digital skills with a focus on three main areas: the changing labour market, safety in the online world, and communication with the state.

Our faculty will focus on safety in the online world, offering four interesting workshops:

Threats children face in the online environment

Children are exposed to a number of threats in the online environment, such as online predators who try to gain their trust and establish contact through various platforms. Phishing attacks are becoming increasingly common, and children can be exploited to provide sensitive data such as payment card information. Cyberbullying is another serious threat, which can include taunting, intimidation or the dissemination of false information. Parents often share photos of their children on social media without thinking about the consequences, which increases the risk of abuse. It is essential that parents encourage their children to keep their social media accounts private and to use them from a certain age, thereby increasing their protection and safety online.

Protecting Children Online

Parental control and monitoring are key tools for protecting children in the digital world. Apps such as Google Family Link, Apple Family Sharing, Qustodio and Bark offer various options to monitor and manage children’s online activities. It is also important to set restrictions on social networks that allow parents to regulate children’s access to inappropriate content. In addition to technical solutions, parents should regularly discuss with their children the risks associated with internet use and teach them how to behave responsibly online. This reinforces their awareness of the dangers and helps them avoid potential problems.

Social engineering and parental protection in the online environment

In today’s digital age, it is essential to educate parents about the various forms of online threats. Dictionary attacks that focus on cracking weak passwords underscore the importance of using strong and unique passwords that should be changed regularly. Phishing emails are another common threat, so it is important to recognise suspicious messages. Parents should also pay attention to software updates, data backup and social media privacy to protect not only themselves but also their children from these threats.

“Crochet with Hynek”

“Crocheting with Hynek” is a workshop aimed at raising awareness of cyber security through the creative process of hacking. Participants will learn about basic cybersecurity principles such as data protection and safe online behaviour. During the course, they will learn how to create strong passwords, recognize phishing attacks and protect their online accounts. The workshop combines art with practical security skills, encouraging discussion about current threats and creating a community for knowledge sharing.
