Mathematics and physics competition The Hub Junior took place at UJEP
On November 22, 2024, the international mathematics and physics competition The Hub Junior took place at the Jan Evangelista Purkyně University in Ústí nad Labem, intended for pupils of 8th and 9th grades of primary schools and multi-year grammar schools. Participants competed in a 120-minute team competition, during which they solved interesting problems in mathematics and physics. This year’s 12th edition brought 30 teams from 16 different schools from the Ústí nad Labem region to the University of Ústí nad Labem, and this competition site was the only one in the region.
The competitors had the opportunity to compare their skills not only with each other, but also with 317 other teams in the Czech Republic and with participants in other countries where the competition took place. In total, there were 60 cities in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland and Austria, with teams from Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium and Croatia participating in the online format.
The Ústí nad Labem round was organised by the JČMF Ústí nad Labem branch in cooperation with Jan Evangelista Purkyně University. Academics and students from the Department of Mathematics and Informatics of the Faculty of Social and Economic Sciences (FSE) and the Departments of Physics and Mathematics of the Faculty of Science (FN) of UJEP were significantly involved in the organisation.
PhDr. Jiří Přibyl, Ph.D., Chairman of the Ústí Branch of the JČMF, appreciated not only the knowledge of the contestants, but also their teamwork.
“The work of teachers leading pupils to learn about science and mathematics is of great importance,” thanked the teachers present for their key role in mathematics and physics education the Vice Dean for Science and Research of the Faculty of Science, Jaroslav Zukerstein, PhD.
At the end, the main organizer of the Ústí nad Labem venue, Ing. et Mgr. “I thank all the organizers for their excellent work. Without them it would not have been possible. And of course, a big thank you to the students from MFF UK in Prague and FMFI UK in Bratislava, who prepared all the tasks and the whole concept of the competition. I look forward to seeing you again next year at the 13th edition of the competition here at the University of Ústí nad Labem.”
The Hub Junior competition at UJEP has once again shown the importance of cooperation between schools, academia and professional organizations such as the JCMF. The successful organization of this year’s competition confirms the importance of these activities for the development of young people’s talents.
