Three courses, one certification. UJEP Launches a Unique Master’s Program in Teaching
A teaching degree typically leads to two teaching certifications, meaning a qualification to teach two subjects. The Faculty of Science at Jan Evangelista Purkyně University in Ústí nad Labem is now introducing a new program that is unprecedented in the Czech Republic. The new master’s program in STEM Teaching for Upper Elementary School will allow students to earn teaching certification in three subjects through selected combinations of science and technology fields. Applications for the program will be accepted until August 16, 2026.
Three Subjects, One Path
While most future teachers study a combination of two disciplines, students in the new program will choose a combination of three subjects from five key STEM areas—mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, and computer science.
In practice, this means much broader career opportunities. Graduates will be able to teach several subjects at once, a skill that will be particularly valued by elementary schools, which have long been seeking qualified teachers in science and technology fields.
STEM? Exactly What Schools Need
The term STEM refers to the integration of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. These fields are among the most in-demand today, not only in the job market but also in education.
The new program was therefore created with a clear goal—to prepare teachers who will be able to respond to the real needs of schools while imparting to students knowledge in fields that will become increasingly important for the future.
No Theory from the Blackboard
A major part of the program will be hands-on experience. Students will go directly into schools and, during what is known as the “clinical year,” experience the day-to-day reality of the teaching profession.
So it’s not just about studying specialized subjects and pedagogy. The program is designed so that, upon graduation, students will know not only what to teach, but also how to teach.
What subject combinations are available?
In the 2026/2027 academic year, the following three study combinations will be offered:
Biology – Chemistry – Computer Science
Physics – Mathematics – Computer Science
Physics – Chemistry – Computer Science
Each of these combines fields for which there has long been high demand for teachers in schools.
It’s possible to study while working
The program will be available in both full-time and part-time formats. In addition to recent high school graduates, it may also appeal to current teachers seeking to enhance their qualifications or professionals from other fields considering a career change.
Who is the program ideal for?
The program is designed for those interested in mathematics, natural sciences, and computer science who wish to pass on their expertise to future generations. It may appeal to both recent high school graduates and individuals from other fields interested in a teaching career.
