The Faculty of Science at UJEP hosted experts on algae and cyanobacteria. The Phycology 2026 conference offered three days of science, discussion and education
From 23 to 25 September, the Faculty of Science at UJEP hosted a gathering of experts in the field of algae and cyanobacteria research. The 67th Meeting of the Czech Phycological Society in Ústí nad Labem was attended by nearly 60 participants from the Czech Republic and abroad.
During the three-day programme, presentations were given on various areas of contemporary algology. These covered, for example, the ecology and biodiversity of algae and cyanobacteria, as well as their evolution, physiology and systematics. The presentations showcased research from Czech sites and from various parts of the world, including polar and tropical regions. In addition to oral presentations, the programme also included a poster session and informal evening gatherings.
Experts from the Czech Republic and abroad
The programme featured three invited lectures. On Wednesday, RNDr. Dora Čertnerová, Ph.D., from Charles University and the University of Innsbruck spoke; on Thursday, Prof. Dr. Nils Kröger from the Technical University of Dresden; and on Friday, Tyler J. Kohler, Ph.D., from Charles University.
The international dimension of the conference was underlined by the participation of experts not only from the Czech Republic, but also from Germany, the USA and India. The event thus provided a forum not only for presenting research findings, but also for networking, sharing experiences and exploring new opportunities for collaboration.
“We were delighted to welcome colleagues and students from the Czech Republic and abroad to the Faculty of Science at UJEP. Alongside the academic programme, there was ample opportunity for discussions and informal get-togethers, which are an integral part of such conferences. Participants also had the chance to get to know our department and campus,” says the conference’s academic supervisor, Mgr. Pavla Urbánková, Ph.D., from the Department of Biology at the Faculty of Science, UJEP.
A meeting that brought science and people together.
For the Faculty of Science at UJEP, hosting the 67th meeting of the Czech Algological Society was an opportunity to showcase not only the results of research into algae and cyanobacteria, but also its academic facilities and the university environment.
“Such professional meetings are an important part of the academic environment. They enable us to share the latest findings, explore new topics and, at the same time, give our students the chance to meet experts from various institutions. I am delighted that we were able to host this year’s meeting of algologists right here at our faculty,” says RNDr. Regina Herma, Ph.D., Vice-Dean for External and International Relations at the Faculty of Science, UJEP.
The three-day Phycology 2026 event thus offered not only a range of specialist presentations, but above all a space for people to meet who share an interest in algae, cyanobacteria and their significance in the world around us.
