Great tits have once again made themselves at home in our camera nest box—join us in watching this natural spectacle online!
The Center for Science Education at the Faculty of Science, Jan Evangelista Purkyně University in Ústí nad Labem, is pleased to announce that the birdhouse with a camera is occupied once again—for the second time by a pair of great tits. How many chicks are in the nest? How will they fare? How many times a day do the parents feed them? Join us in filling out the online ethogram—a record of observed behavior. Together, we can contribute to a better understanding of bird life.
Thanks to the Wi-Fi-connected online camera, you can watch what’s happening in the nest box in real time and witness fascinating moments from the lives of these feathered friends.
We will keep you regularly updated on the nesting progress and the citizen science project itself via the website of the Center for Science Education Support at the Faculty of Science, UJEP, and our social media channels. We look forward to following this unique story together.
The goal of this project is not only to observe bird behavior but also to strengthen our connection to nature, increase interest in environmental protection, and promote science education. The project also supports the development of scientific literacy among the general public.
The Great Tit (Parus major) is one of the most well-known and widespread songbirds in our region. We can recognize it by its yellow belly with a black stripe, black head with white cheeks, and distinctive song. It most often nests in tree cavities or in birdhouses and is very well adapted to urban environments as well.
“Although the great tit is one of our best-known birds, I believe that a glimpse into its private life will surprise you and reveal something new,” says Assoc. Prof. Kateřina Jančaříková, Ph.D., head of the Center.
