ScienceTalks: Pavel Beránek – Teacher, researcher, and computer scientist in the age of AI
In the latest episode of the Science Talks podcast, we welcomed Pavel Beránek, a graduate of our faculty who has had an interesting career path – from high school physics teacher to assistant professor at the Department of Informatics. Today, Pavel is not only involved in teaching, but also in computational physics, software engineering, and the current topic of artificial intelligence.
In the interview, we took a close look at how teaching at a high school differs from teaching at a university. Pavel shared his modern approach to education – why he tries to develop students’ skills and independence instead of just imparting knowledge, and how he responds when students reject this style. We didn’t shy away from popular stereotypes either. Are computer scientists people who live in basements, drink only cola, and whose main job is to fix printers? In our survey, Pavel revealed how much truth there is to this and what computer science is really about. Of course, we couldn’t leave out questions about AI. We were interested in whether artificial intelligence has the potential to replace computer scientists in the future and how Pavel uses it in his research.
