Twenty years of science, discoveries, and inspiration: The Faculty of Science at the University of Jan Evangelista Purkyně celebrates 20 years since its founding
Twenty years ago, on November 4, 2005, the Faculty of Science at Jan Evangelista Purkyně University in Ústí nad Labem was officially established. Its first dean was Doc. Stanislav Novák.
Over the past two decades, the faculty has transformed into a modern educational and research center that connects the natural sciences, technology, and education. Today, it offers studies in a wide range of fields—from biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics to geography, computer science, and nanotechnology—and contributes significantly to the development of regional and international science.
Since 2020, the faculty has been based in the newly built Center for Natural Sciences and Technical Fields (CPTO) – a modern building in the heart of the university campus that provides state-of-the-art facilities for teaching, laboratories, and scientific work.
The faculty currently has eight departments, including biology, chemistry, physics, geography, computer science, and mathematics, as well as the Center for Science Education (CPPV) and the Center for Nanomaterials and Biotechnology (CENAB), which connects cutting-edge research in the fields of materials and biotechnology sciences. The faculty is home to more than 1,200 students, approximately 100 employees, and dozens of research projects with national and international reach. “Twenty years is not only a reason to celebrate, but also to thank everyone who was there at the birth of the faculty and who helps to constantly move it forward—academics, students, and employees,” said the current dean of the Faculty of Science at UJEP, doc. RNDr. Michal Varady, Ph.D.
The faculty is looking forward to a festive meeting on the occasion of the anniversary on November 27, 2025, when we will not only commemorate the history, current achievements, and outlook for the coming years, but also award an honorary doctorate to Prof. William R. Smith from the University of Guelph in Canada.
