Our mission in science and research
Research at the Faculty of Science is carried out in several areas. These areas are linked to the activities of individual faculty components. However, some of the areas of research listed below are being implemented through their cooperation.
Biology
Key research topics include not only classical biologic disciplines but also topics involving biomedicine and nanotechnology.
Didactics of physics
Research topics in the field of physics didactics include a wide range of issues of education of physics at primary, secondary and higher education institutions, within which we focus on revising the concept and content of teaching physics at primary and secondary schools and creating a concept of university training for teachers of physics.
Geography
Research topics include a wide range of geographical disciplines focused on political, social, cultural and economic processes in space, the environment, changes and management of the cultural landscape, didactics of geography, the geography of education, application of geoinformation tools in landscape assessment and territorial development.
Chemistry
Key research topics include both the topics that have been researched for a long time such as molecular modelling and simulation, physical chemistry, analytical environmental chemistry and toxicology. As well as newly introduced topics in the field of synthetic inorganic and organic chemistry and chemical engineering.
Informatics
Research topics within computer science disciplines mainly follow modern trends in the fields of data science, modelling or simulation of systems and dependability.
Mathematics
At the Department of Mathematics there are being developed the following areas of research: general topology, topologic groups and theory of categories, real analysis and its applications to the problems of the calculus of variations and differential equations, varieties of ordered semigroups, phylogenetic and ontogenetic development of the infinity concept, problem solving in school mathematics and methodological improvements in data envelopment analysis and in solving economic problems.
Nanotechnology
Chemical and physical methods of preparation of nanomaterials for a wide range of applications from functional nanolayers prepared by plasma technology through new forms of pharmaceuticals to biosensors.
Computer modelling in science and technology
Development and application of computer models and computational methods suitable for the study of matter and processes taking place in it. From microscopic systems at the level of atoms and molecules through mesoscopic and macromolecular systems, granular systems and continuous fluid modelling on a common spatial scale to astronomically large magnetohydrodynamic systems including space plasma.
