The 26th Werner von Siemens Awards have begun

Applications for the 26th Werner von Siemens Awards for students in technical and natural science fields and young scientists are now open. Candidates can apply through the website www.cenasiemens.cz until 30 November, 2023.

At the opening of this year’s competition, Eduard Palíšek, General Director of Siemens Group in the Czech Republic, said, “I often hear from previous winners of the Werner von Siemens Awards that the recognition has helped them in their further scientific and academic careers or in obtaining grants. I look forward to seeing outstanding work and nominations of unique individuals in this year’s edition.

In the upcoming edition, the competition will award one million Czech crowns across eight categories. In the category of the best bachelor’s and doctoral theses, both students and their advisors will receive financial rewards. Over the past 25 years, Siemens has awarded a total of 15.3 million Czech crowns to 450 winning students, scientists, and educators.

The announced categories include:

  • Most significant result in basic research
  • Best pedagogical worker
  • Best bachelor’s thesis (first three places + thesis advisor)
  • Best doctoral thesis (first three places + supervisor)
  • Award for overcoming obstacles in studying (candidates nominated by academic staff from the ranks of bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral students at the respective university)
  • Special award for outstanding quality in women’s scientific work
  • Best graduate thesis (bachelor’s/doctoral) focusing on Industry 4.0 concepts
  • Best graduate thesis (bachelor’s/doctoral) focusing on smart infrastructure and energy

The jury chairs are:

  • RNDr. Eva Zažímalová, CSc. (Chairwoman, Czech Academy of Sciences) – Most significant result in basic research (individual or research team)
  • MUDr. Martin Bareš, Ph.D. (Rector, Masaryk University in Brno) – Award for overcoming obstacles in studying (candidates nominated by academic staff from the ranks of bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral students at the respective university)
  • Ing. Ladislav Janíček Ph.D., MBA, LL.M. (Rector, Brno University of Technology) – Best bachelor’s thesis (first three places + thesis advisor)
  • RNDr. Vojtěch Petráček, CSc. (Rector, Czech Technical University in Prague) – Best doctoral thesis (first three places + supervisor)
  • MUDr. Milena Králíčková, Ph.D. (Chairwoman, Czech Conference of Rectors) – Best pedagogical worker
  • Eduard Palíšek, Ph.D., MBA (General Director, Siemens Czech Republic) – Special award for outstanding quality in women’s scientific work
  • Ing. Vladimír Mařík, DrSc., dr. h. c. (Scientific Director, Czech Institute of Informatics, Robotics, and Cybernetics, CTU) – Best graduate thesis (bachelor’s/doctoral) focusing on Industry 4.0 concepts
  • Ing. Stanislav Mišák, Ph.D. (Director, Centre for Energy and Environmental Technologies, VŠB-TUO) – Best graduate thesis (bachelor’s/doctoral) focusing on smart infrastructure and energy

In the last competition, the Czech Technical University in Prague (CTU) and Charles University received the most awards (4 each), followed by VŠB – Technical University of Ostrava and Brno University of Technology (3 each), Czech Academy of Sciences and Palacký University in Olomouc (2 each), and Masaryk University (1 award).

Once again, the general public can participate in the nominations this year. Nominees and their work can be nominated through the website www.cenasiemens.cz. In case the nominated candidate wins, the nominator will receive a premium of 10,000 Czech crowns.
